Skiing Whistler Blackcomb, told properly

Whistler Blackcomb is skiing at continental scale: two full-size mountains — over 8,000 acres between them — rising a vertical mile above a pedestrian village that never quite goes to sleep. Whistler Mountain opened in 1966, born of an (initially failed) Olympic bid; Blackcomb followed in 1980, and their decades-long rivalry drove both to greatness before they merged into a single super-resort. In 2010 the Olympic dream finally landed, with the Vancouver Games' alpine events run on Whistler's Creekside flank.

The terrain is famously complete. Storm after Pacific storm buries the alpine bowls — Whistler Bowl, Harmony, Symphony, the Blackcomb Glacier — while mid-mountain cruisers roll for kilometres through old-growth forest, which is exactly where you want to be when the coastal weather closes in. Linking it all is the Peak 2 Peak gondola, whose 3 km unsupported span between the two summits remains an engineering landmark.

Add a genuinely walkable village of patios, breweries and après institutions, and you get the resort that routinely tops North American rankings — and earns it.

Signature runs

Peak to Creek

Whistler's monster: roughly 11 km and over 1,500 vertical metres from the peak to Creekside in a single run.

Blackcomb Glacier

A short bootpack through a col opens onto a huge, mellow glacier bowl — big-mountain scenery at intermediate pitch.

Spanky's Ladder chutes

Blackcomb's expert playground — a bootpack gains four steep, rocky bowls that hold the resort's most serious lines.

7th Heaven

Sun-soaked alpine cruising on Blackcomb's south side, with views across to Black Tusk on clear days.

Local tips

  • On storm days ski the trees (Rock'n'Roll zone, Crystal chair) — the alpine will be shut or blind anyway.
  • Beat the gondola line by starting from Creekside, where the Olympic downhill finished.
  • The first hour after the alpine reopens post-storm is the best skiing on the continent; be standing at Peak or Glacier chair.
  • Dusty's in Creekside is the unpretentious après; the Longhorn at the base is the circus.

Good to know

  • Whistler Blackcomb is the largest ski resort in North America at more than 8,000 acres.
  • The Peak 2 Peak gondola's 3.03 km unsupported span set a world record when it opened in 2008.
  • Whistler hosted the alpine skiing events of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics.
