Skiing Laax, told properly

Laax decided decades ago that snowboarding wasn't a fad — and built the most committed freestyle resort in Europe around that bet. Its snowparks (four-plus, spread across the mountain) cover every level from first box slides to Olympic-training kicker lines, and the superpipe on Crap Sogn Gion is billed as the world's largest at 200 m long. Every January the LAAX Open brings the world's best snowboarders here; many just never leave.

But reducing Laax to parks sells it short. Shared with the villages of Flims and Falera, the area spans huge, sunny intermediate terrain, the Vorab glacier at over 3,000 m, and long descents like the 'Downhill' to the valley. It all sits atop the UNESCO-listed Tectonic Arena Sardona, where the Glarus thrust fault put older rock on top of younger and helped geologists understand mountain-building itself.

The vibe is completed at the base: the design-led Rocksresort, the riders' hotel with its indoor Freestyle Academy, and an easy-going crowd where the average age drops ten years the moment you leave the groomers.

Signature runs

P60 superpipe (Crap Sogn Gion)

The 200 m world-record superpipe where Olympic medallists train — watching from the chairlift is a show in itself.

Vorab glacier to Alp Ruschein

Top-of-the-world glacier cruising rolling into one of the area's longest, quietest descents.

The Downhill (Crap Sogn Gion – Flims)

A leg-burning classic to the valley floor, weaving from alpine bowl to forest trail.

Local tips

  • Progression heaven: start in the Ils Plauns beginner park and work up — the park crew designs for step-by-step learning.
  • The Flims side's forest runs (toward Foppa) are the storm-day sanctuary.
  • Walk the frozen-turquoise Caumasee below Flims on a rest day — it's a short hike and absurdly photogenic.
  • January's LAAX Open week is the best free spectator sport in Switzerland — and the parks stay open to the public.

Good to know

  • Laax's superpipe is billed as the world's largest at 200 metres long with 6.9 m walls.
  • The surrounding Tectonic Arena Sardona is a UNESCO World Heritage site for the science of mountain formation.
  • The LAAX Open, successor to the Burton European Open, is one of snowboarding's longest-running contests.
