Skiing Verbier – 4 Vallées, told properly

Verbier is where the world's best freeriders come to prove it. Every spring the Freeride World Tour crowns its champions on the terrifying 3,222 m Bec des Rosses above the Col des Gentianes — the Xtreme Verbier, contested since 1996 on a face most skiers are happy just to photograph. That event didn't choose Verbier by accident: the town sits at the hub of the 4 Vallées, Switzerland's largest linked ski area, a web of high ridgelines, couloirs and itinerary runs that reward strong legs like nowhere else in the country.

From the Mont Fort glacier at 3,330 m the panorama sweeps from the Matterhorn to Mont Blanc, and the descents live up to it: the mogul wall at Tortin, the long itineraries off Mont Gelé, and endless off-piste that turns the whole area into a freeride arena after a storm. Yet the linked villages — Nendaz, Veysonnaz, Thyon, La Tzoumaz — keep gentler, sunnier pistes for everyone else.

Off the hill, Verbier is unapologetically glamorous: a south-facing balcony village of chalets, serious restaurants and après that starts at altitude and finishes very late indeed.

Signature runs

Tortin

The infamous mogul face — a vast, relentless wall of bumps that serves as the 4 Vallées' unofficial entrance exam.

Mont Fort glacier descent

From 3,330 m with a Matterhorn-to-Mont-Blanc panorama, a steep top wall easing into huge open carving terrain.

Mont Gelé itineraries

Marked-but-ungroomed big-mountain descents straight off the cable car — freeride flavour without a hike.

Vallon d'Arby

The classic backcountry-lite itinerary to La Tzoumaz — a quiet, scenic valley run away from every lift.

Local tips

  • Ride the first Jumbo cable car to Gentianes on a powder day or accept leftovers — Verbier tracks out fast.
  • The itinerary runs are avalanche-controlled but ungroomed and unpatrolled at the edges; carry a beacon and mind the closures.
  • Watch the Xtreme Verbier finals from the Gentianes col in late March — bring binoculars and disbelief.
  • Savoleyres/La Tzoumaz is the overlooked sunny sector — perfect family terrain minus the main-area crowds.

Good to know

  • The Freeride World Tour has held its final on Verbier's Bec des Rosses since 1996 — faces average 50°+ in places.
  • The 4 Vallées is Switzerland's largest linked ski area, spanning roughly 400 km of runs.
  • Mont Fort's summit platform at 3,330 m sees both the Matterhorn and Mont Blanc on a clear day.
