Flex Ratings Explained — Why Beginners Want a Softer Board

Browse any board and you will see a flex rating, usually a number from 1 to 10 or a label from soft to stiff. It describes how much the board bends under pressure, and it has a bigger effect on how a board feels than its graphics ever will. For a beginner, the answer is almost always: go soft.

What Flex Actually Does

  • Soft flex (around 1 to 4). Bends easily, forgives mistakes, and turns with gentle effort. Forgiving at low speeds, which is exactly where beginners live.
  • Medium flex (around 5 to 6). A balanced all-rounder you can grow into after your first season or two.
  • Stiff flex (around 7 to 10). Holds an edge at high speed and powers through hard carves, but demands precise input and punishes errors. Not a beginner board.

Why Soft Wins for Learning

  1. Easier turn initiation. A soft board flexes into a turn with less force, so linking turns comes faster.
  2. More forgiving of edge catches. When you make the inevitable mistakes, a soft board is less likely to throw you.
  3. Comfortable at slow speeds. A stiff board feels dead until you are going fast, which is intimidating early on.

The One Catch

Soft does not mean flimsy. A quality soft board still holds an edge fine for beginner speeds. You only outgrow it once you are charging hard and want more stability — a happy problem for a future season.

Pick a soft, forgiving board and it will flatter your riding from day one. Then use Bonvo's 3D maps to find a resort with mellow blues where that soft flex really shines.
