Self-Catering Apartments — Saving Money on Your First Snowboard Holiday

Self-catering apartments are the budget champion of European snow trips. For groups of 4+ they can be 60% cheaper than hotels. The trade-off is doing your own meals, which is more work but also has hidden upsides.

The Cost Math

A 6-person apartment for 7 nights in Saalbach: ~€2,400 (€57/person/night). Comparable 6 hotel rooms at halfboard: ~€6,000 (€143/person/night). Even buying food at the resort supermarket, you'll spend €50/person on groceries — total ~€87 vs €143. Six people save ~€2,000 per week.

What Apartments Provide

  • Equipped kitchen — Stove, fridge, basic pots/pans, dishwasher in most.
  • Living area with TV — Common space for the group.
  • Bedrooms or sofa beds.
  • Ski locker or storage.
  • One weekly cleaning included; daily extra.

The Apartment Snowboard Routine

  1. Big shop on arrival day. Breakfast supplies, lunch supplies, dinners for 4–5 nights.
  2. Pre-make breakfasts. Cereal, fruit, eggs. Easy.
  3. Pack lunches. Sandwiches in jacket pockets. €5/day per person vs €20 mountain lunch.
  4. Dinner — rotate cook duty. 2 nights pasta, 1 night stew, 1 night fondue, 2 nights out.

The Common Mistake

Underestimating the kitchen. Apartment kitchens are functional, not gourmet. Bring or buy basic spices, olive oil, and salt — most apartments don't stock them.
