Hotel vs Hütte vs Apartment — Which One Fits Your First Snow Trip

European snow destinations offer three main accommodation types. Each has a clear personality and a clear best-fit traveller.

Hotel

  • Cost — €100–250 per person per night, breakfast and dinner usually included (the "halfboard" system).
  • Pros — Daily housekeeping, hot breakfast, sauna and spa, restaurant on-site, ski storage.
  • Cons — Most expensive. Fixed dinner times. Often a coat-and-tie expectation at dinner.
  • Best for — Couples, first-time travellers, anyone who doesn't want to cook.

Hütte (Mountain Hut or Chalet)

  • Cost — €40–120 per person per night, often half-board.
  • Pros — Unique Alpine atmosphere, often ski-in ski-out, family-run, traditional food.
  • Cons — Smaller rooms, shared bathrooms in older properties, often remote.
  • Best for — Travellers wanting Alpine character, groups of 4–8 booking out a chalet.

Apartment (Self-Catering)

  • Cost — €30–80 per person per night with no meals included.
  • Pros — Cheapest, most flexible, cook what you want, drink your own wine.
  • Cons — No housekeeping, you cook every meal, gear takes over the entry.
  • Best for — Groups of 4+, families, repeat visitors who already know the resort.

The First-Trip Recommendation

Hotel with halfboard for trip 1. The fixed routine — breakfast, ride, dinner, repeat — removes decision fatigue when you're already exhausted from learning. Switch to apartments on trip 3 once you know the resort and have your gear sorted.
