Train vs Rental Car vs Airport Transfer — Getting to the Resort

Once you've landed, you still need to get to the resort. Three options exist, each with clear trade-offs.

Train

• Best for — Solo travellers, environmentally conscious riders, scenic routes.
• Cost — €30–70 from major airports to mountain hubs.
• Pros — Cheap, reliable, you can sleep, you can drink, you can use your phone.
• Cons — Limited stations. Many resorts are 30 min taxi from the nearest train station.
• Best routes — Munich → Innsbruck → Mayrhofen by train is brilliant.

Rental Car

• Best for — Groups of 3–4 splitting the cost, families with gear.
• Cost — €50–80/day plus fuel plus insurance plus parking.
• Pros — Door-to-door. Multiple resorts on one trip. Stuff in the boot.
• Cons — Snow chains required in many regions (€30–50 rental). Winter driving stress.

Airport Transfer (Shared Shuttle)

• Best for — Groups of 1–2 who don't want a car, riders who don't want to deal with public transport.
• Cost — €30–60 per person, one-way.
• Pros — Door-to-door. No driving stress. Booked online ahead.
• Cons — Departure times are fixed. Long wait if your flight is delayed.

The Beginner Recommendation

For your first European trip: airport transfer or train. Avoid renting a car until you've done one winter trip and know the routes. The peace of mind matters more than the savings.
