Flying With a Snowboard — Airline Fees, Bag Sizes, and Tips

Flying with a snowboard isn't difficult, but every airline has different rules and fees. Get this wrong and your gear arrives late, damaged, or with a surprise €100 charge.

What Counts as a Snowboard Bag

A snowboard bag is typically a soft padded bag containing the board, bindings, boots, and small gear. Maximum dimensions matter:

• Most European airlines (Ryanair, easyJet) — 200 cm maximum length, 32 kg maximum weight.
• Long-haul (BA, KLM, Lufthansa) — More generous, often 158 linear inches (length + width + height).
• Low-cost carriers — Almost always require pre-booking the sports equipment fee online. €40–80 each way.

What to Pack in the Bag

1. Board, bindings attached — Bindings still on the board, in their normal mounting position.
2. Boots wrapped around the bindings — Cushions them and saves space.
3. Snowboard pants and jacket as padding — Wrap around the board's nose and tail.
4. Helmet inside the boot — Helmet protects the bag's middle, boot protects the helmet.
5. Goggles in your hand luggage — Don't risk damage.

The Common Mistakes

• Forgetting to pre-book the sports fee — €60 saves you €120 at the airport.
• Putting valuables (camera, phone, watch) in the snowboard bag — they get stolen.
• Underpacking — bag below 23 kg is wasted space.
