Skiing Val Gardena, told properly

Val Gardena is one of the valleys where the Ladin people still speak their ancient Rhaeto-Romance language, carve wood as they have for four centuries, and ski out the back door into the most theatrical mountain scenery in Europe. The three villages — Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva — line up beneath the Sassolungo and the sheer ramparts of the Sella massif, glowing pink at dusk.

For racers, this is hallowed ground: the Saslong World Cup downhill has run here since 1969, famous for its 'camel humps' — a series of jumps where racers fly further than anywhere else on tour — and the rattling Ciaslat meadow section. For everyone else, Val Gardena is the perfect base for the Sella Ronda, the day-long circuit of the entire Sella massif on skis, clockwise or anticlockwise, through four Ladin valleys and endless perfectly groomed corduroy of the Dolomiti Superski.

The valley hosted the Alpine World Championships in 1970, and skiing here still feels like joining a very old, very good-natured local tradition — one best sealed with a plate of casunziei and a grappa in a wood-panelled hut.

Signature runs

Saslong

The World Cup downhill with its legendary camel humps — open to the public most of the season, and humbling at any speed.

Sella Ronda circuit

Not one run but forty: the full circumnavigation of the Sella massif, one of skiing's great days out.

La Longia

From the Seceda ridge under the Odle spires, a 10 km descent through gorges and meadows to Ortisei — arguably the most scenic run in the Dolomites.

Local tips

  • Start the Sella Ronda by 9:30 and check the last-lift board — being caught two valleys from home is a taxi bill to remember.
  • Ride Seceda even if only for the ridgeline view of the Odle — the Dolomites' most photographed skyline.
  • Baita huts beat base restaurants every time; look for homemade casunziei and Kaiserschmarrn.
  • December race week transforms the valley — watch the camel humps from the Ciaslat fence, then ski the course next morning.

Good to know

  • Ladin, a Rhaeto-Romance language over a thousand years old, is still spoken daily in Val Gardena.
  • Racers on the Saslong's camel humps regularly jump 60–80 metres — the longest flights on the downhill circuit.
  • Val Gardena's woodcarving tradition dates to the 1600s, when winter-bound farmers carved toys that were sold across Europe.
