Jet Lag Strategies — Snowboarding After a Long-Haul Flight

Long-haul flight + altitude + snowboarding is a tough combination. Jet lag can rob you of two days of mountain time if you don't manage it. Here's the practical playbook.

Before the Flight

  1. Shift your sleep schedule 1 hour per day for the 4 days before flight. Tiny adjustments, big payoff.
  2. Hydrate hard the 24 hours before. Flying dehydrates you. Start ahead.
  3. Light dinner before bedtime flight. Heavy food + economy seat = bad sleep.

On the Flight

  • Set your watch to destination time the moment you board. Mental shift starts now.
  • Sleep when it's nighttime at destination. Eye mask, earplugs, no caffeine.
  • Stay awake when it's daytime at destination. Even if your body wants sleep.
  • Drink 250ml of water every hour you're awake. No alcohol on the flight.
  • Stand up and walk every 90 minutes. Circulation matters at altitude.

On Arrival

  1. Daylight immediately. Even cloudy daylight resets the circadian clock.
  2. Light exercise. A 30-minute walk beats a nap.
  3. Don't ride day 1. Acclimatize. Day 2 will be 10x better.
  4. Eat at local meal times. Food cues reset the body's clock.
  5. Go to bed at local 10 PM. Resist the 2 AM "I can't sleep" trap — read a book if needed.

Day 2 of any overseas trip should be your first riding day. Day 1 is acclimatization, not snowboarding.
