Base Layers and Mid-Layers — The Real Secret to Staying Warm
New snowboarders almost always over-dress with a giant jacket and freeze anyway. The fix is layering. A proper layering system regulates heat and moisture in ways a single thick coat never can.
The Three-Layer System
- Base layer (next to skin) — Merino wool or synthetic. Wicks sweat away. Never cotton — cotton holds moisture and gets dangerously cold.
- Mid-layer (insulation) — Fleece, lightweight down, or synthetic puffy. Traps warm air. Easy to add or remove depending on conditions.
- Outer layer (shell) — Your waterproof jacket. Blocks wind and snow.
The Adjustment Game
Walking to the lift, you should feel slightly cold. If you feel warm standing still, you will be drenched in sweat ten minutes into riding. Sweat = wet base layer = cold ride to the next lift.
Carry a small backpack with a spare mid-layer. When the weather turns colder, you add. When the sun comes out, you strip. The riders you see comfortable in every condition are not wearing magic gear — they are just managing layers.
