Choosing Your First Snowboard Jacket — Waterproof Ratings Decoded
Every snowboard jacket lists two numbers somewhere on the tag: waterproof rating and breathability. Most beginners ignore them and end up either soaked or sweating. Once you understand what the numbers mean, picking a jacket takes about five minutes.
The Two Numbers
- Waterproof rating (mm) — How much water pressure the fabric can resist before leaking. 5,000 mm is light snow only; 10,000 mm handles most conditions; 20,000 mm is heavy storm protection.
- Breathability rating (g/m²) — How much sweat vapor escapes per square meter in 24 hours. Higher = more breathable. For a beginner who falls a lot and warms up quickly, look for 10,000 g or more.
Insulation vs Shell
An insulated jacket bundles warmth and weatherproofing in one. Easy and warm, but you cannot strip down on warmer days. A shell jacket is just the waterproof layer — you wear it over base layers and a mid-layer. More flexible but you need to learn how to layer.
For your first season, an insulated jacket rated 10K/10K is the sweet spot. Comfortable, weatherproof enough, and one less thing to think about while you are learning to ride.
