Speed Tracking Deep Dive — Understand Your Max and Average Speeds

Everyone wants to know how fast they ski. Bonvo.Ski's speed tracking records both your maximum and average speeds during every run recording — but understanding what those numbers actually mean takes a little more thought. Let us dive in.

Max Speed vs Average Speed

Your max speed is the highest instantaneous speed captured during the recording. It usually happens on a steep, groomed section where you tucked or let your skis run. Your average speed includes everything — the fast sections, the slow turns, the stops at intersections, and the flat traverse at the bottom. It is a much more honest measure of how you actually ski.

Typical Speed Ranges

  • Beginner — Max 20–40 km/h, average 10–20 km/h
  • Intermediate — Max 40–70 km/h, average 20–35 km/h
  • Advanced recreational — Max 70–100 km/h, average 30–50 km/h
  • Expert / racer — Max 100–130 km/h, average 50–70 km/h

GPS Accuracy Notes

Speed data comes from your phone's GPS, which samples your position multiple times per second. In open terrain, GPS speed is remarkably accurate — typically within 1–2 km/h. In tree-lined areas or narrow valleys, accuracy can drop. For the most reliable readings, keep your phone in a chest pocket or arm mount where it has a clear view of the sky.

Use speed data to track your progression over the season. Are your averages climbing? Are you hitting new max speeds on familiar runs? The numbers tell a story — and Bonvo.Ski captures every chapter.
