The Nose Press and Tail Press — Buttering Basics
"Buttering" is the snowboarder term for pressing while moving — turning the board on either end, spinning, and using the flex of the deck to do tricks on flat ground without any park features. It's modern snowboarding's most stylish move family.
What's a Butter?
A butter is a press combined with rotation. You're nose- or tail-pressed, then you twist the body and let the lifted end of the board swing around. Done well, the board pivots 180° or 360° on the snow.
The Nose-Butter 180
- Start with a clean nose press. Hold it for 2 seconds.
- Twist the shoulders in the direction you want to spin.
- The tail follows the twist, swinging around 180° while the nose stays on the snow.
- You land facing the opposite direction, riding switch.
- Ride out switch — heelside falling leaf if you're not yet comfortable switch-riding.
Why Butters Are the Best Beginner Tricks
- No park features required. Any flat groomer works.
- Low-consequence falls. You're moving slowly, close to the snow.
- Teaches switch riding. Land switch, ride out switch, learn fast.
- Looks great in videos. Style points immediately.
If your first season ends with confident butter 180s, you're ahead of 90% of beginners.
