Pressing — How to Look Cool on Flat Ground
Presses are the soul of jib-style snowboarding. They look stylish, they teach board feel, and they make any flat groomer into a playground.
What a Press Is
A press is balancing on either the nose or tail of the board while the other end lifts off the snow. The board flexes under your weight. Hold it for as long as you can without falling.
The Nose Press
- Riding straight on flat ground, knees bent, low speed.
- Shift weight forward over the front foot. Hands forward, hips forward.
- Lift the back foot's weight. The tail rises off the snow.
- Balance on the nose as long as you can. Hold for 3 seconds.
The Tail Press
Mirror move. Weight back, nose lifts, balance on the tail. Marginally harder because you can't see ahead well.
Why Practice Presses
- Board feel — You learn what the board does under asymmetric weight.
- Balance — Holding a press is real edge-and-base control practice.
- Park readiness — Every box trick beyond 50-50 uses press technique.
- Fun — Riding flat groomers stops being boring once you're nose-pressing them.
Spend 10 minutes per ride day on press practice. The progression from "I can hold it 1 second" to "I can hold it the full slope" is incredibly satisfying.
