Summer Snowboarding on European Glaciers — Hintertux, Stubai, Saas-Fee
Summer doesn't have to be the off-season. A handful of European glaciers run lifts through June, July, and August — real snow, real lift access, real snowboarding while everyone else is at the beach.
The Summer Glacier Trio
- Hintertux, Austria — Open 365 days a year. The glacier sits at 3,250 m and offers about 20 km of summer slopes. Mornings only — by 11 AM the snow turns to slush.
- Stubai Glacier, Austria — Open until early July. Wide gentle slopes at 3,000+ m. Excellent for novices because the angles are gentle and the parks have small beginner features.
- Saas-Fee, Switzerland — The Allalin glacier above 3,500 m. Smaller terrain than Hintertux but a long-standing summer freestyle hub with daily morning training camps.
What Summer Glaciers Are Like
- Mornings are gold — Lifts open early (often 7 AM). Snow is firm and grippy until 10 AM, then softens fast.
- Sun is brutal — High altitude plus snow reflection = sunburn in minutes. SPF 50, lip balm, full-coverage goggles.
- Lift accessible only — You don't need to hike. Just take the gondola.
- Snowboard parks operate — Especially at Stubai and Saas-Fee. Summer is when pro riders train new tricks.
If you want to feel snow under your board before your first proper winter season, a 3-day glacier trip in June is the cleanest way to do it.
