Rental vs Buying for Your First Season — A Cost Breakdown
Most first-time snowboarders agonize over whether to rent or buy. The math is actually pretty simple once you write it down.
The Numbers
- Resort rental (board, boots, bindings) — €30–50 per day in Europe, $50–80 in North America.
- Season rental from a city shop — €200–350 for the whole winter. Way cheaper than per-day, but only worth it if you live near a shop and ride 10+ days.
- Buying a new beginner setup — €500–800 for board, boots, and bindings combined. Resells for 50–60% after a season.
- Buying used — €200–400 for the same setup. Resells for 70% of what you paid.
The Decision Tree
- 1–3 days of riding planned → Rent at the resort. Don't waste money owning gear.
- 4–9 days planned → Season rental from a city shop OR buy used.
- 10+ days planned → Buy used. By day 10 you've paid for the setup and you still own it.
- You know you'll keep riding → Buy good boots and bindings; rent the board until you know what you want.
Boots are the exception to every rule. Never rent boots more than three days in a row. Hostel-grade rental boots cause more frustration than every other gear decision combined.
