Hintertux Glacier — The Year-Round Autumn Safe Bet

By Gergely Kovacs, founder of BonvoHintertux Glacier

If you want the single most reliable autumn snow in the Alps, the answer is almost always Hintertux. It is Austria's only glacier open essentially every day of the year, which makes it the default choice when you want to guarantee that the lifts will be spinning in October and November.

What Makes Hintertux Special

  • 365-day operation. While other glaciers open seasonally, Hintertux keeps a core of terrain running all year.
  • High altitude reliability. Snow at the top of the glacier holds firm through autumn, even in mild spells.
  • A real lift network. Unlike some glaciers with one or two runs, Hintertux opens a meaningful spread of terrain early.

Using Slope Analysis Before You Go

This is where a little homework pays off. Open Bonvo's slope analysis and you can sort Hintertux's runs by difficulty and steepness, so you know in advance which open pistes match a novice's comfort level.

  1. Filter for easy runs. Surface the greens and gentle blues first.
  2. Check the steepness figures. A run labelled blue can still have a steep pitch — the numbers tell the real story.
  3. Plan a sensible loop. Link easy runs into a circuit you can repeat to build confidence.

Autumn Realities

Even at Hintertux, autumn snow is firm in the mornings and the open terrain is smaller than midwinter. The upside is that you are guaranteed snow and a proper learner-friendly mountain to practise on.

For a first early-season trip where you cannot afford a wasted journey, Hintertux plus Bonvo's slope analysis is about as safe as it gets — reliable snow, and a clear plan of which runs to ride.
