Pitztal and Kaunertal Glaciers — Quiet Early-Season Riding
Not every glacier is a busy race venue. If you want a calmer first early-season trip, the neighbouring Pitztal and Kaunertal glaciers in Tyrol are two of the most relaxed options. Both typically open for autumn riding in October, and both reward novices who prefer space over scene.
Pitztal Glacier
Pitztal is home to Austria's highest glacier lift, reached by an underground funicular that climbs through the mountain. That altitude means dependable autumn snow. For beginners, the appeal is the quiet — fewer crowds than the big-name glaciers, and patient grooming on the open runs.
- Funicular access. You ride a train inside the mountain, then a cable car to the top — an experience in itself.
- High, cold, reliable. The extreme altitude keeps snow firm and consistent in autumn.
- Gentle upper runs. Once enough terrain opens, the broad upper slopes suit cautious first-timers.
Kaunertal Glacier
Just over the ridge, Kaunertal is reached by a scenic toll road that switchbacks up to the glacier car park. It has a reputation as a low-key, family-friendly glacier, which translates well to nervous novices.
- Drive to the snow. The glacier road delivers you straight to the lift base.
- A dedicated learner area. Kaunertal usually keeps beginner terrain available early.
- Uncrowded weekdays. Midweek autumn days can feel almost private.
Which to Choose
