How to Wax Your Snowboard at Home — Step by Step

Waxing your own board is one of the most satisfying beginner skills, and it saves money over a whole season. With a cheap iron, a block of wax, and a scraper, you can do it on the kitchen table in about twenty minutes.

What You Need

  • All-temperature snowboard wax. One block lasts many waxes.
  • A waxing iron or an old clothes iron with no steam holes.
  • A plastic scraper and a stiff nylon brush or cloth.
  • Two chairs or a stable surface to lay the board flat, base up.

The Steps

  1. Clean the base. Wipe away dirt and old wax with a dry cloth.
  2. Set a low iron temperature. The wax should melt smoothly, never smoke. Smoking means too hot.
  3. Drip wax onto the base. Hold the block against the iron and let drops fall in a zig-zag line down the board.
  4. Iron it in. Spread the wax evenly, keeping the iron moving so you never scorch one spot.
  5. Let it cool fully. Wait at least thirty minutes, ideally an hour.
  6. Scrape off the excess. Pull the scraper from tip to tail in long strokes. You want a thin, even layer, not a thick crust.
  7. Brush or buff. A final brush reveals the base structure and adds glide.

How Often

For a beginner riding a few days at a time, waxing before each trip is plenty. If the base looks white and dry mid-trip, it is time for another coat.

A freshly waxed board deserves a great destination. Use Bonvo to preview your resort in 3D and pick the wide, gentle runs where that smooth glide will feel amazing.
