Protective Gear for Beginners — Impact Shorts, Knee Pads, and Back Protectors
Learning to snowboard means falling, and falling means impacts — on your backside, your knees, your tailbone. Beyond the helmet and wrist guards we have already covered, a handful of protective pieces can turn a bruising first week into a comfortable one. Worn under your clothes, nobody even knows they are there. This is also where Bonvo's snowboarder mode helps you ride smart from day one.
The Beginner Protection Kit
- Impact shorts. Padded shorts worn under your snow pants that cushion your tailbone, hips, and backside. For a beginner who sits down constantly and catches heel-side edges, these are the single most worthwhile pad after wrist guards.
- Knee pads. You spend a lot of early time kneeling in the snow to strap in and stand up. Padded knees save the bruises and let you keep practising.
- Back protector. A padded spine guard, often built into a vest or backpack. More of a confidence and safety upgrade than a daily must, but reassuring as you push onto steeper terrain.
How to Choose
- Fit snug under your layers so pads stay in place when you move and fall.
- Look for flexible foam that softens on impact but does not restrict your riding.
- Prioritise by where you fall — for most beginners that means impact shorts first.
Ride Smart, Not Just Padded
Protection lets you fall without fear, but choosing the right terrain matters just as much. Bonvo's snowboarder mode highlights beginner-friendly runs and flags the gentle slopes where your first falls will be softest. Pad up, open the 3D map, and pick the mellow blues where you can practise tumbling and recovering in confidence.
