Summer Dryland Basics — Getting Started on a Balance Board
If there is one piece of off-season equipment worth a beginner's money, it is a balance board. Snowboarding is, at its heart, a balance sport — and a balance board lets you train that exact skill on dry land, indoors, year-round. Ten minutes a day can quietly rewire your stability so your first winter turns feel far less wobbly.
Choosing and Setting Up
- Start with a roller-style board. A deck on a rolling cylinder mimics the side-to-side feel of carving.
- Clear your space. Train on a soft surface with a wall or chair nearby to grab if you wobble.
- Go sock-footed or barefoot at first. You will feel the board better and build foot awareness faster.
Your First Sessions
- Without the roller, stand on the board on the floor and find your neutral, knees-soft stance.
- Add the roller with a hand on the wall, and simply hold balance for ten seconds at a time.
- Once steady, practise shifting weight slowly from toe edge to heel edge — the core motion of turning.
- Build up to balancing hands-free, then to small, controlled edge-to-edge rolls.
The goal is not tricks — it is calm, automatic balance that frees your mind for everything else on the mountain. Pair these short daily sessions with planning: open Bonvo.Ski, explore the gentle slopes of a beginner-friendly resort in 3D, and visualise putting your new balance to work this winter.
